Best Flooring Options for Fort Worth Homes: Hardwood vs Tile vs LVP

Published on July 27, 2026 by Jesse

Hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, tile, or carpet? We compare the best flooring options for the Texas climate, with costs, pros, and cons.

Choosing flooring for a Fort Worth home means balancing looks, durability, and how each material handles the Texas climate. Between humidity swings, active families, and pets, your flooring takes a beating. Here's how the top options stack up in 2026, based on what we install every week across Fort Worth, Aledo, and Parker County.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

LVP is the most popular flooring we install in Fort Worth right now, and for good reason. It's waterproof, scratch-resistant, and visually indistinguishable from real wood in most cases. It handles Texas humidity beautifully because it doesn't expand and contract like solid hardwood. Cost runs $4 to $8 per square foot installed, making it the value leader. The downside: it can't be refinished, so once it wears out, it's replaced, not sanded.

Solid Hardwood

Nothing beats the warmth, character, and resale value of real solid hardwood. White oak and hickory are the most popular species in North Texas. Hardwood costs $10 to $20 per square foot installed, and it can be refinished multiple times, lasting 50 years or more. The catch: solid hardwood isn't ideal in bathrooms, basements, or anywhere moisture is a risk, and Fort Worth humidity can cause seasonal gaps. Engineered hardwood is a more dimensionally stable alternative at $8 to $16 per square foot.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

Tile is the workhorse of Texas flooring. It's waterproof, cool underfoot in summer (a blessing in July), and virtually indestructible. Porcelain tile with a wood-look finish gives you the appearance of hardwood with the durability of tile. Cost runs $8 to $15 per square foot installed. The main downsides: tile is hard on feet and legs if you stand for long periods, and grout needs periodic sealing. We recommend epoxy grout or a dark sealed grout to minimize staining.

Carpet

Carpet still has a place, especially in bedrooms where warmth and sound absorption matter. Nylon and triexta fibers stand up best to Fort Worth families and pets. Cost is $3 to $7 per square foot installed. The downsides are obvious: carpet stains, holds allergens, and needs replacement every 8 to 12 years. Most of our clients now use carpet only in bedrooms and use hard-surface flooring throughout the rest of the home.

Cost Comparison at a Glance

LVP: $4 to $8/sq ft. Engineered hardwood: $8 to $16/sq ft. Solid hardwood: $10 to $20/sq ft. Ceramic and porcelain tile: $8 to $15/sq ft. Carpet: $3 to $7/sq ft. These are turnkey installed prices, materials plus labor and prep.

What Works Best by Room

For living areas and hallways: LVP or solid hardwood. For kitchens: LVP, tile, or engineered hardwood. For bathrooms: porcelain tile or LVP. For bedrooms: carpet for comfort, or LVP for durability. For entryways and mudrooms: porcelain tile, it shrugs off wet boots and paw prints.

Durability in the Texas Climate

Fort Worth's climate swings from humid summers to dry winters, with temperature swings that stress solid wood. If you go with hardwood, maintain indoor humidity between 35% and 55% using your HVAC and a humidifier in winter. Tile and LVP are largely immune to climate issues, which is why they dominate in North Texas homes.

Subfloor Prep Matters

The quality of your new floor depends on the subfloor beneath it. In older Fort Worth homes, we often find uneven or damaged subfloors that need leveling before any new flooring goes down. Budget $1 to $3 per square foot for subfloor prep if your home is more than 20 years old. Skipping this step leads to squeaks, cracked tile, and failed warranties.
